Last Sunday night, I (half heartedly) put on my chicest frock and my edgiest makeup and headed down to Boombox. Arriving after nine, I was grateful for being on the list, as far fiercer outfits were being turned away to see Vancouver’s own Stinkmitt perform at Boombox.
Billed as irreverent and subversive, Stinkmitt did not disappoint with their high octane mix of electro, dirty lyrics and an outrageously energetic stage show (Betty Ford’s splits must be seen to be believed!). With the crowd storming the stage to dance with the girls it was an exercise in hedonistic chaos.
Once iconoclastic and a herald of all that was fantastic about the London style set, it may be headed towards conventionality and self congratulation (after the Boombox book launch the week before and Stinkmitt’s return after playing their opening night two years ago). With the club kids more eager to be looked at (and discovered) than to have a good time, Boombox has lost some of its former edge, but is still one of the best nights out to watch the fantastic and spectacular.
