So I’m a week late on this, and as I’m reminded constantly, the Internet never sleeps, but I shall persevere with my late sporadic entries. I was rather disappointed by Eurovision this year. I have been a massive fan of the Eurovision for many many years, even when it was played on SBS at some inconvenient hour. When I was young I loved the cheesy costumes and bad music, as I grew older I appreciated it as an opportunity to play drinking games, as Ellisa and I did in 2006, getting louder, drunker and bitchier as the competition went on. However, this year I feel that I have participated in Eurovision by watching it in what I would call one of its spiritual homes, Compton’s on Old Compton Street. Watching the competition as compared by a drag queen who got steadily drunker as the evening went on, I expected the evening would be filled with bad costumes, terrible singing and loads of schadenfreude, but sadly Eurovision has cleaned up its act. Even Russia who could always be relied on for amusement had a song produced by Timbaland (even if they did have an ice skater as part of the act), I just wanted to say I’m disappointed Eurovision, the songs are no longer hilariously awful, they’re just boring and I had to try really hard to find bad things to say about them that didn’t involve me shrugging and saying ‘meh’. That said Bosnia and Herzegovina did not disappoint with their knitting granny brides and nor did Croatia with ‘seventy cent’ the septagenerian rapper. Check them out below:
